The role of military topographers, geodesists and cartographers in providing troops with topographic maps and aerial photographs, as well as geodetic data for referencing artillery batteries during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) is discussed. The work to create the Berlin plan on a scale of 1:15,000 in the besieged Leningrad is described in detail. This plan helped to identify the strategic objective, operative formation of the troops and to outline the sequence of capturing the main targets in the city, including the Reichstag.
